Family Enrichment and Recreation

Mesa Public Library Youth Services – In addition to a large selection of children’s young adult literature, Mesa Public Library offers programs for children of all ages, including Music & Movement, Baby Storytime, Toddler Time, Family Storytime, and Homework Help.

Family Strengths Network –  Family Strengths Network offers a wide array of community programming related to family enrichment, from their Resource and Toy Lending Libraries to classes and support groups.

Family YMCA –  The Family YMCA of Los Alamos offers healthy living programs and classes for all ages and skill levels.  Parents can take advantage of the “Child Watch” program for a kid-free exercise experience, and the Family YMCA also offers team sports and camps for children.

PEEC  Pajarito Environmental Educational Center offers a full-dome planetarium, wildlife observation room, indoor and outdoor play areas, and interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits.   The Los Alamos Nature Center is a great place for family fun days because it has something for everyone!

Basic Needs

Self Help, Inc. – Self Help, Inc. provides assistance with basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and utility payments.  People needing assistance can call Self Help, Inc. directly, or they can dial 2-1-1.  (505) 662-4666

2-1-1 Information and Referral – 2-1-1 provides free information and referral to community and state-wide resources.

LA Cares – LA Cares provides monthly supplemental food distributions.  Advance registration is required to receive a food box.

Casa Mesita – Casa Mesita is a resale store that offers clothing and household items at low cost.  (505) 662-7235

The Shop on the Corner – The Shop on the Corner is a weekly resale store that offers clothing and household items at low cost.  (505) 662-5107

New Mexico Income Support Division – The New Mexico Income Support Division webpage can be used to apply for public assistance programs such as SNAP (food stamps), Medicaid, state-funded utility support, and other programs.

Health and Mental Health 

Los Alamos Mental Health Access Project – The LAMHAP is a compendium of mental health resources for Los Alamos County, including lists of signs and symptoms and how to get help.

Los Alamos Family Council, Inc. –  Los Alamos Family Council provides counseling, alcohol and substance abuse programs, DWI school, youth activity centers, and domestic violence and sexual assault services.

Los Alamos Health Commons – Los Alamos Public Health Office-M,W,F– The Los Alamos Public Health Office provides WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program, Breast and Cervical Cancer screenings, family planning assistance, immunizations,  HIV testing and counseling, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and Tuberculosis treatment.  (505) 662-4038

Domestic Violence and Victims’ Services

Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico – Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico provides victim advocacy, individual and group therapy, and an emergency shelter.

Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families, Inc. – The Esperanza Battered Persons Shelter provides crisis intervention, an emergency shelter, counseling, on-call advocacy, life skills education, and court advocacy for individuals and families experiencing domestic violence.

Solace Crisis Treatment Center –  Solace Crisis Treatment Center provides clinical services, sexual abuse/assault education and prevention programs, and resources for survivors of violent crimes.

New Mexico Children Youth and Families – The New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department accepts calls concerning suspected child or elder abuse through their toll-free hotline.  1-800-797-3260
